We’re in a unique position at the moment. Here we are in the middle of June, the roster is signed, the squad looks balanced and the new coach is rightly receiving the plaudits, however the ink is not yet dry on the final contract and some are already saying what a wonderful team we have and how we’ll sweep all before us. I’d just like to ask these people, having never seen the team play together, how can they make such an assumption?

Of course, we get this every year once the team (or at least a majority of it) is signed. It seems to be the cue for a frenzy of fans suggesting we’ll win everything from the league to the play-offs to the boat race! Every year this happens. Why? Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing at all wrong with a little optimism but Panthers fans seem to be the worst at suggesting we’ll conquer all before us, only to end up sorely disappointed and with large quantities of egg on the face come Christmas time!

Let’s deal with the facts. I agree that Corey Neilson appears to have recruited well, we look to have a balanced line up but how can anyone have any idea how we’ll do until the team has played together for a few games? Factor in that Neilson is a rookie coach and needs to given time and I think some expectations could be a little high. I’ve no doubt that if it all goes breasts skyward in the first couple of months the optimism will be replaced with the usual scorn and vitriol.

My point is, let us lower the expectation a little because not only do we put an immense amount of pressure on the team, we put an immense amount of pressure on ourselves as a fanbase. What’s the point of being miserable for most of the season because expectations were too high? Let’s lower the expectation level a bit, we may then be pleasantly surprised.

It’s good to be optimistic but I prefer to see the real talking done out there on the ice where it matters. I tend not to listen to some of the hype, especially from the club at times over the years.

The Panthers appear on paper to have done well with their recruiting this close season but I think we’ve all been through this scenario a time or three. A lot can depend on how players and lines gel and how quickly. A good start out of the blocks is so important to the season.

Your point about the coach is a good one Jono. Much will be expected of him as he learns the ropes. He’ll undoubtedly make mistakes like every other rookie coach but hopefully will learn from them quickly.

I think a guarded optimism is in order here…
