Panthers v Steelers Preview

The normal hype, spin and general rubbish that precedes these games has been put to one side for this final game of the series. After the sad passing of Dave Page on Monday, the hockey world was dealt another blow on Tuesday when Owen Grant, social secretary of the SSSC also passed away. I only knew Owen through his son Dave (Big Dave Steeler). Owen was a nice guy who, always took the time to say hello with a smile. The sad events of the past week have ensured that Saturday night will be a very emotional one, with events planned before face off to remember both men.

After all that has happened the game almost seems unimportant, but the Steelers could still win the league title on Saturday but would have to win and hope that Basingstoke, on a 21 game losing run, beat second placed Coventry Blaze. The Panthers will also be looking to keep their 100% winning record over the champions elect at the NIC this season and will also want to win for Dave Page.

After this weeks events it seems inappropriate to hark back to previous games this season. I’m hoping for a good, hard fought, entertaining game of hockey that would be a befitting tribute to those we have lost. I am also hoping for a Panthers win, the Steelers are going to be the champions this season, I’m sure they wont mind waiting an extra week for it! 😉

One of the few times I’ve ever read your previews and agreed with most of it Jono, only the wanting Panthers to win bit do I disagree with, and thats not a surprise really.

Dave P & Owen will I hope be up there somewhere keeping an eye on us all, lets hope we all give them both something to be proud of whatever the final score.
