Panthers 4 Giants 3

The final home game of the regular season, and Panthers welcomed the newly crowned Challenge Cup winners Belfast Giants to the NIC, hopefully a little worse for wear after their trophy winning celebrations! It wasn’t to be in the first though, early on David Clarke missed the net after having what seemed like an age to pick his spot with no Giants D man in site. It was the visitors who took the lead on the powerplay in the sixth minute, Evan Cheverie given acres of space to poke home at the back post without a defenceman near him. The lead didn’t last long, David Clarke equalised with his first goal since his return from injury, again right in front with no defence (are you spotting a theme here?)  However just 101 seconds later it was 3-1 Giants, George Awada with a brace as our defence decided to take a mid period break! Michel Robinson was not happy! Despite 93 seconds of 5 on 3 powerplay and Dan Tessier inexplicably missing the target when given time and space in front of the net, the Panther went into the 1st interval still 3-1 down. If the Giants were hungover, they weren’t showing it.

Panthers pulled a goal back early in the second, Danny Meyers hitting a beauty into the top corner so hard that it rebounded all the way back to Panthers goal line! The second was memorable for Stevie Lyle keeping Panthers out at one end and Michel Robinson making an unbelievable save from George Awada at the other. Panthers finally got the equaliser their play deserved when Kevin Bergin scored on the powerplay after some great work by Corey Neilson. 3-3 going into the second interval.

Giants were now visibly tiring  and Panthers took the lead when Brendan Cook scored his 30th goal of the season, ripping one over Lyle’s shoulder. Despite another 97 seconds of 5 on 3 powerplay, the Panthers couldn’t extend the lead and nearly paid for it as the Giants pulled Lyle near the end while on their own powerplay. Just 4.8 seconds from time panthers went two men down as Neilson was sent to the box. 6 on 3 in the Giants favour, but cometh the hour, cometh the man. Who else but Bruce Richardson won the face off and played the puck out the zone and Panthers had the points.

So that’s it for the regular season at home, just the play-offs to come now and with this victory Panthers cannot finish any lower than third place, with second still a possibility. All will be revealed on Sunday night!

look forward to seeing the Panthers in the Big Blue Tent on Sunday, both teams still playing for league positions so should be a good one.
