On the Chopping Block

Just a few weeks into the season some Elite League coaches have sharpened there axes, put on their lumberjack shirts and started chopping away at their rosters. Sylvain Cloutier at Hull has been the busiest so far, cutting Ryan Jorde last week and releasing Matt Reynolds & Slava Koulikov today. Former Edinburgh Capital & Cardiff Devil Jason Silverthorne has been brought in to replace Reynolds, while as yet no replacement for Koulikov has been announced. It looks like Cloutier will not settle for second best this season and his rung the changes early.
Meanwhile in Sheffield, Jeff Hutchins is unsurprisingly the scapegoat for their dreadful start to the season (and long may it continue say I!) With injuries to Kevin Reiter and Scott Basiuk to also contend with, the Axis of Evil have signed up goalie Andrew Verner, defenceman Stephen Wood and forward Matt Hubbauer, which will leave the import fraternity at Sheffield shaking like shitting dogs once the injuries clear up, as a trip to the job centre could be in the offing! However, perhaps the imports could feel a little hard done by as the Steelers British players have combined for a massive 2+4 in their 10 games so far! To put that into perspective Panthers Marc Levers has scored 4+5 so far this season on his own!
As for the rest, Coventry’s excellent performance on Sunday has seen Paul Thompson lock the tool shed for the time being, while in Belfast the persistent rumours regarding Sean McMorrow’s future at the Giants have died down lately, especially as no replacement has been forthcoming for George Awada since Bobby Robins decided he preferred yodelling!
