Panthers v Steelers v Panthers

Christmas is here again, and as usual it comes the ridiculous hype that is a Panthers v Steelers back to back series. This year the Steelers fans are getting their collective knickers in a twist over how many of their ever diminishing fanbase will be in Nottingham for the game on Boxing Day. I would advise anyone not to read the relevant thread regarding this on Steeltalk, I actually felt my IQ dropping as I read it! A message for the Steelers fans who seem so bothered by this, outside of South Yorkshire, no-one cares!

Anyway, on to the hockey itself. The Steelers have come in to a bit of form of late, winning their last four games. But they are still in sixth place and despite what they may say, it isn’t a fluke that they’re in that position. Panthers meanwhile are still gloriously inconsistent, a run of three wins coming to an end with a demoralising defeat at bottom club Hull last Sunday, but they still find themselves in second place behind the Blaze, and will need to win both games if they are to continue to post a meaningful challenge for the title. Since the last time the teams met at the NIC in November, Panthers have won an 8-5 win/loss record in the EIHL, while the Steelers have a better 9-3 record and also qualified for the Continental Cup final in January.

Early team news is that Stevie Lee and Tom Norton will be back for the Panthers after helping GB under 20’s to a World Championship Gold Medal. Panthers have 12 imports to choose from, and it has been hinted on the Panthers website that Mario Larocque will miss out and probably be replaced by Nick Toneys, after that it’s anyone’s guess but I would assume that Richardson, Neilson, Molin and Galbraith are more than safe. The Steelers are likely to have Jonathan Phillips missing after he picked up a match penalty against Cardiff for allegedly sucker punching Jay Latulippe. Steelers have appealed to the league to have the ban quashed, so expect Phillips to be in their line up on Saturday!

TCW Live will be providing live text updates from both games this weekend, links will be posted on Boxing Day morning.
