Five years since The Rink Rush

People will always look back on their life and fondly remember certain periods and special times. Mine is easy. Five years ago I was fortunate enough to be part of The Rink Rush, a group of six lads who went round the country visiting every rink that had a senior mens hockey team in a week, raising money for Cancer Research UK along the way.
None of us knew what to expect, but the reception we got just blew us away. It seemed for one week the whole British hockey community came together to help us, and their generosity helped us raise over £13,000.
The highlights and great memories are far too numerous to mention, but the main ones for me were:

  • Walking into Lee Valley rink and seeing the London Racers playing in special Rink Rush shirts.
  • Eric Cairns telling what he said to Andy Carson to get a 10 minute misconduct (not printable!)
  • Feeling the history in the air in an empty Fife rink, and the rink manager telling us “I met Dave Simms the other week. After everything I’d heard about him I was prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt but he really is an odious t***!”
  • Being in every country of the United Kingdom in just 12 hours!
  • Mark Bernard’s face after being told the price of buying us all a Costa Coffee in Basingstoke.
  • Raising over £300 from a bucket collection in Romford from a crowd of just over 600, and also hearing the chant “2+10”
  • Just catching the ferry to the Isle of Wight, being raced to the rink by a taxi, then raced back to just catch the same ferry back to Portsmouth.
  • Meeting the Newcastle Vipers fans at their arena, then them taking us to a bar in Newcastle for a special surprise party they’d laid on for us.

It was a superb week, with great mates and a fantastic amount of money raised for charity. It was a special time and if I could relive that week again I’d do so in an instant, I just can’t believe that it was five years ago, doesn’t time fly!
