Panthers 3 Giants 1

After the disappointment of losing to the lowly Steelers last night this was a must win game if Panthers were to keep their almost non-existent championship hopes alive.
The game got off to an explosive start. Sean McMorrow and Kevin Bergin dropped the gloves, and while the sheriff claimed the victory Bergin didn’t disgrace himself, getting a few shots in on the Giants hard man. Job done though, because I don’t recall seeing McMorrow on the ice again after he came out of the penalty box, and we all know what he did to us the last time Giants were in town! Thanks to Iain Dilley, the You Tube video of the fight is below:

Once the pantomime was over the game could begin. Giants went in front, Jeff Szwez capitalising on a Corey Neilson mistake and firing over KSP’s shoulder while short-handed. Throughout the first Panthers had chances but found Stephen Murphy in good form, plus every time the Giants came forward they looked dangerous. With the visitors leading 1-0 at the break there was an uneasy feeling around another large NIC crowd.
The nervousness that was felt in the first interval dissipated as Jay Henderson scored the equaliser early in the second. 1-1 became 2-1 shortly after as David Clarke ripped a vicious slap shot into the top corner from point on the powerplay. The Panthers were now in the ascendancy and had noticeably upped their game. No more goals were scored in the second, but Panthers out shot the Giants 14-9 in the period.
Although Panthers were on top they were given a warning of how dangerous the Giants are early in the third, Szwez finding himself wide open in front of the net but thankfully he put his shot wide. Giants had another chance to level when there found themselves with 1.15 of a two-man advantage powerplay, but despite calling a time-out Panthers manged to kill it off quite easily. The killer third goal came from an unusual source, good work from Bruce Richardson set up Stevie Lee who put a cracking slapshot over Murphy’s shoulder and into the net.
All in all it was a good, solid performance from the Panthers against a Giants side who tired over the course of the game, but still looked dangerous when they came forward. Quite simply Panthers have to keep winning games to keep a glimmer of a chance of winning the big prize, solid performances like tonight would be very welcome for the rest of the season.

McMorrow came on again for a few minutes, i think it was the 3rd period. Didn’t do much and went off again.
