The Shift Hits The Fans

Before I toddled off to bed late last night I noticed Steeltalk had a thread saying “Steelers Announcement on BBC Radio Sheffield 6am”. ‘Another cheap signing’ I thought then turned in. This morning I was woken by the Steelers supporting other half screaming ‘Matsos, Simms and O’Connor have quit the Steelers!’ I have to admit that the first words out of my mouth was ‘That’s you lot screwed then!’
She went off to work in a huff and I got up to scour the forums to see what had gone off. It was all there in black & white, in one morning Steelers had lost their coach, GM, press officer, office manager and hired help. To say Bob Phillips was in a pickle is a mild understatement! In Cardiff this morning there was a small earth tremor as 1,000 Devils fans shook their heads, tutted and said ‘I told them so’ all at the same time!
The mass resignation has been caused by the aforementioned ‘resignees’ losing confidence in Bob Phillips ownership of the club and shock waves spread across Sheffield, not least when there was another earth tremor as around 1,000 Steelers fans finally removed their heads from the sand! Maybe Bob Westerdale isn’t the devil incarnate after all!
As the day went on the ‘unofficial’ Steelers Forum Steeltalk was taken off-line. It came back later with a statement from Bob Phillips saying it was business as usual and he will carry on alone whilst looking for people to fill the now vacant posts. It was also revealed that any posts on Steeltalk would have to be ‘viewed’ by moderators before they were posted on the forum. Any posts that were deemed to be detrimental to the club would not be published! At the time of writing the ‘Unofficial’ Steelers forum has not yet changed its name to Stalintalk! One of the most controversial days in the Steelers history and the fans couldn’t even debate it on their own forum! Thankfully the Cage is a little more open minded.
No doubt this story will continue to run and run, it’s going to be an interesting couple of months that’s for sure. I’ll end on a prediction. Steelers will announce a new coach next week to replace Matsos (who I reckon walked because he was ordered to produce an entertaining team next season, it’s not in his coaching make-up!) Bob has to appease some very angry fans, what’s the betting that the new guy will have the initials MWB?

Typical Steelers summer for us. I thought I had a cracking suntan but it’s all the shit that flies off the fan as it hits it and splatters on all of us supporters.

It’s difficult to have any sympathy with Sheffield and I have little. It is however a sad set of events for UK hockey in general and I fear it does little for the game’s image in this country. Quite the contrary, it stands to make the game here look a bit ‘mickey mouse’ in some eyes.

UK hockey needs more clubs that are prudently run and financially solvent on a long-term basis. Sheffield have unfortunately failed on both counts – to the detriment of the league as a whole.

To be honest, for me, enough is enough. I have it it with bloody Wednesday and now The Steelers. Pouring money in to other peoples pockets so they can pee it up the wall.
