Panthers 12 Stars 2

To say last night wasn’t what I was expecting would be a massive understatement! Dundee came to the NIC having gained an excellent point on Thursday night in Belfast and expected them to give us a bit of a test. Unfortunately that never happened, it was a serious case of men against boys as Dundee looked like the players had never even met before as Panthers raced into a 3-0 lead with barely five minutes gone. Stars stopped the rot by pulling one back but it was 4-1 at the first break as David Clarke got a tip in to regain the three goal advantage.
The second started with Stars replacing their netminder Jerad Kauffman with young back-up Mark McGill. I think Kauffman may have been injured as he was sat on the Stars bench holding an ice pack to his back. McGill’s first move was to collect the puck from the back of the net as Dustin Sproat made it 5-1 and further goals from Clarke, Billy Ryan and Jade Galbraith made it 8-1 at the period end, however it would have been much worse if it hadn’t been for McGill as he made some excellent stops while being hung out to dry by his defence. It was very noticeable to me though that not one of the Stars players tapped his pads when he made a good stop!
The third continued as the rest of the game as Panthers continued to dominate, ruthlessly carving through the Stars with ease, and it wasn’t long before it was 9-1 through Matt Myers. Stars scored their second through Mark Nebus, but then Panthers went into overdrive adding another three goals through Sproat, Clarke (hat-trick) and Myers again to make the final score 12-2.
This was all too easy for the Panthers and sadly the Stars looked hopelessly out of their depth, but you can only beat what’s put in front of you and Panthers did that with aplomb. The two new players look very useful additions to the squad, Rob Bellamy is lightning quick and Angel Nikolov is calm and assured at the back, however I expect them to have a sterner test in Hull this evening.
Overall a win is a win and I’m sure the Stars are better than last night suggested. However, I expect Dan Ceman to be making changes after that performance.
