The Original Marmite Player

Recent events and views on The Cage show that Jade Galbraith is the epitome of a Marmite Player. You either love him or hate him, there is very little middle ground amongst the Panthers fanbase.
Currently debate is raging as to whether Galbraith will be returning to the black & gold for a fourth season in 2011/12 and opinions seem split right down the middle, half want him back, half want him to go.
You’d think that a player who has scored 71+180 in 175 games would be top of most supporters list to return, but obviously it’s not as simple as that. Galbraith brings baggage and lots of it, he has been overweight, it is alleged he likes the booze, he is prone to throw a tantrum if things don’t go his own way. He disgraced himself in Belfast in January and many fans (including me) felt he should have been sacked for his indiscipline at the time. On the other hand he is capable of sheer genius, a piece of skill that can turn a game and he probably has the best hands in the league. He is the complete flawed genius and it’s probably because of his weaknesses that he plays in the Elite League rather than in Germany, Sweden, or the North American minor leagues.
To draw a comparison with football for a moment, some of the greatest players the game has ever seen had questionable lives outside the game, you only have to look at the careers and subsequent retirements of George Best, Paul Gascoigne and Diego Maradona. While they reached pinnacles in their sport that Galbraith will never reach in hockey, I feel it is a fair comparison as Galbraith is considered one of the best imports currently playing at this level.
The jury is out. I can see both sides of the argument and am one of the few who genuinely can’t decide if I’d like to see him playing for Panthers or not next season. One thing I am sure of though is that I’d hate to see him playing against us!

Well, not wanting to trivialise everything that you wrote, Jono, but your final two sentences sum it up for me perfectly.

I’m with you – stay? Dunno, but if he doesn’t, I want him to go to abroad!!!

I for one felt that Jade should have gone after the Belfast debacle. However, with the benefit of hindsight, I now feel that the season would have been much the poorer without him. With the controlling Strachan on board again I’m sure he could be an asset to the team once more.

At least he makes the game interesting … too much passion? Bring him back I say
