Excuses, Excuses!

I really don’t want to have a downer on the Panthers, on the whole it’s been a good start to the season, the team looks improved and confidence is still high (although a little downbeat after Saturday!) However one thing that has annoyed me for ages about the club is the excuses they come out with after a defeat. It really gets my goat that just for once we cannot hold our hands up and say ‘you know what, on the night we were just beaten by a better side’. Saturday is a prime example, we were quite clearly beaten by the better side on the night. I know some will choose to blame the referee and others will choose to blame the supposed antics of the Giants (both wrongly IMO), but time has shown that if you only play for one period out of three then more often than not you will be beaten.
To be fair, Corey Neilson’s post game interview on the Panthers site isn’t too bad, but it starts with GM the GM reeling off a list of excuses before saying to him “…but no excuses, coach”! While Neilson refers to Belfast as “Playing like Champions” in the interview, not once to wither GM or Corey actually acknowledge that Belfast were better, more that it was Panthers not turning up for two periods.
The Nottingham Post report goes a bit further, complaining that the Panthers were ‘tired’. I’m sorry but it’s only just November, barely two months into the season, how on earth can we be tired? We’ve only been missing Heerema and still been playing three full lines so I’m afraid that just doesn’t wash with me. Look at Dundee Stars, they recently played six games in twelve days at all ends of the country with players missing due to injury and work commitments. While some of their fans did complain about that crazy schedule, nothing was said by the club, they just got on with it and we could learn a lot from that.

Like I said at the start, I really don’t want to get down on the club as this is one of the most hard working panthers teams I’ve seen for years and that pleases me greatly. I just wish sometimes we would admit that we are beaten by the better side once in a while as I feel reeling out the excuses does us absolutely no favours.

What annoys me about the Panthers, and has done for a good few years now, is that they come out on the wrong end of those close low scoring games far too often. You can’t always blow the opposition away, but Panthers tend to fall behind in those close games and can rarely get their noses in front again and if they do they don’t have the defensive capability to stay there.
P.S. Matt Myers injury will be a huge loss.

While I agree that the panthers didnt play as good as they could (or should) for two periods, I think its a bit harsh to say they didnt turn up. To say that makes the Giants team sound like an average side as they hadn’t put the game out of reach by then.

It almost sounds as though you can not say ‘hay we were beat by the better side’ as well.

What an odd comment Ping. I quite clearly say in the article (twice) that Belfast were the better team on the night and deserved their victory. This line was also consistently used by Ted & myself during the TCW Live coverage from the game.

I just wish the Panthers as an organisation would stop going on about winning the league. If they have a better head to head against at least 3 of the other 4 title rivals(Sheffield, Cardiff, Belfast, Coventry) they´ll win. Meanwhile they should stop heaping the pressure on via their statements and target those vital clashes. No point having an enormous goal difference if it´s against the bottom teams. When does a championship ever get decided by goal difference anyway? At the moment we have a grand total of 2 points against the above teams. And does everybody think the same Sheffield will turn up in the league as in the Challenge Cup? Look at the results they´ve achieved against the top teams, much better than us. No more proclamations Panthers, just get on with it!!

Corey always has excuses for every eventuality….but……………after reading remarks made by plenty of panthers fan I feel Corey should look a little closer to home. It seem lots of Panthers fans feel that HE is becoming the weak link in their D, being blamed on numerous occassions for denfensive mistakes leading to the scoring of crucial goals.
Look in the mirror Corey, instead of laying all the blame at everyone elses doorstep and not your own.
