Panthers v Steelers preview

Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers renew their rivalry at the NIC tomorrow night, with the fortunes of both teams contrasting wildly since Panthers 3-0 victory at the same venue just three weeks ago.
In that time Steelers have a 100% winning record (scoring 24, conceding 11) while the Panthers have struggled with two victories in five games (Scoring 15, conceding 12). Current form would point to a Steelers victory; however it’s not always as simple as that. The two previous meetings this season between the sides showed a huge gulf as Panthers easily overcame their bitter foes without having to hit top form while the Steelers struggled to string two passes together.
Some will argue that it was ‘just the Challenge Cup’ and the Steelers will have more about them in league competition, but Panthers laid down a marker in those games that the Steelers failed to get near. I would expect that to have a bearing tomorrow, Steelers know they have to up their game after the poor showing last time out, however confidence will be high in their camp due to their recent results, whereas Panthers have hit somewhat of a mini slump since the last Steelers victory.
Looking at the results in isolation, Panthers three defeats have come against teams who would be considered title contenders, including defeats against Cardiff and Coventry who have both been beaten by Steelers in their five game winning streak. However it hasn’t all been plain sailing, Steelers conceded five goals at home against a Dundee side that had been shut out by the Panthers just three days earlier.
So what can we expect? It depends which Andy Carson turns up! Hopefully he’ll let the game flow and let the players sort it out between themselves. I would expect plenty of niggles and maybe a couple of scraps, King & Lepine a possibility but probably more likely is a middleweight contest, Lee v Hewitt for example. I don’t see there being many goals, both teams have very good defensive records, however Panthers have the better netminder (IMO) and Kowalski could be the key to a Panthers victory tomorrow. I hope I’m right.
