Unacceptable Behaviour

In all the controversy that surrounded Sheffield’s overtime win over Belfast Giants last Friday, very little seems to have been made about an incident that occurred seconds after Jeff Legue’s overtime winner.
Giants forward Aaron Clarke skated towards referee Andy Carson and appeared to crash into him while swinging his stick two-handed, which hit the Plexiglas to the side of Carson’s head. The incident features at the end of this short You Tube clip:

Regardless of the situations leading up to the incident, no player should ever touch an official, they are sacrosanct. I can totally understand why the Giants players would be angry, they had lost the game due to some dubious at best calls, but you never, ever touch the referee. Whatever you may think of Andy Carson’s abilities as an official, this incident cannot be allowed to go un-punished. An example needs setting and a tough one at that, personally I’d be in favour of a season long ban I think it is that serious an incident. However there have been precedents set. When Andrew Sharp iced for the Steelers he ‘accidently’ hit a linesman with his stick and got a twenty game ban. Last season though, Derek Campbell received just a three game ban for biting a linesman. Therefore there is no consistency so to speculate what sort of ban will be given.
David Simms alleged that the Giants had been campaigning for just a two game ban. Sorry, but that isn’t enough for an incident of this magnitude in my opinion.
We await the outcome of the disciplinary committee, I hope they aren’t lenient.

With the Campbell call, I believe the linesman retracted his complaint hence the ban was decreased and was for something else, not for Biting!

Agreed. But we should still hear his side of the story (red mist, lost it, or whatever …) shouldn’t we? Can’t imagine it being an acceptable excuse though.

As a giants fan I think we should pre empt the outcome and sack him for bringing the club into disrepute

Personally, I’m amazed that’s it’s taken this long for someone to attack Carson. his pro steelers bias has been a problem for a long long time, and calls for him to not be allowed to referee steelers games where he clearly can’t be impartial have been around for a while too. Sorry, but no sympathy at all from me where Carson’s concerned. He brought that upon himself.

6 matches. Elite League obviously believed he didn’t intend to injure ref. Sounds a bit dubious. Lenient.

All this nonsense about Carson/Steelers links. Garbage. All the rumours of links of his wife with the club complete fabrications. Truthfully he is without doubt the least popular official amongst Steelers fans.
In terms of the incident, regardless of context, disappointment, dubious decisions etc, Clarke needs to be banned for more than six games. There has to be a line on incidents like this. I would say the same thing if this was a Steelers player. The overwhelming majority of players know where the line in the sand is and don’t cross it. With the best will in the world, leniency is likely to erode that standard.
