Danny a Steeler!

The news that I expected but deep down didn’t want to hear was revealed today, Danny Meyers will play for Sheffield Steelers for the next two seasons [Sheffield Star link].

The news has been met with cautious optimism by the Steelers fans, most are very pleased with the signing, but with them now having nine British players signed up for 2012/13 they are questioning if enough is left in the budget for the quality of imports they demand (not that budget constraints have ever bothered them in the past, leopards & spots and all that!)
The reaction of the Nottingham fan base has been somewhat subdued and there’s certainly been none of the bile that normally accompanies such a move, a testament of the high regard he was held in and respect he earned during his six seasons with Panthers. Some on The Cage have rounded on posters who have said they will applaud him when he returns. I don’t understand why, Danny never got the chance to say goodbye to the fans and I think that’s the least he deserves for his service to the Panthers when he first returns to the NIC. After that however, I hope he gets smashed all over the ice along with his Tango clad team-mates!

To move off at a tangent for a moment, I didn’t like the fact that the signing was first announced on the Nottingham Post website around midnight. We’ve (rightly) criticised the Steelers when they’ve announced other teams signings before the club in question and two wrongs don’t make a right. It should be left to the signing club or their preferred media outlet to announce the news, no-one else. Rant over!

I’ll be honest, when it comes to the Steelers I tend to adopt a ‘anyone but them’ attitude, especially when it comes to a player I genuinely like & respect moving there. However, for whatever reason, the Panthers decided to terminate his contract and he has a young family settled in Nottingham. If he was to continue playing Elite League hockey and be based in the city he realistically had a choice of two clubs, Coventry Blaze or Steelers. His family has to come first, we all have bills to pay and mouths to feed so I don’t blame Danny for choosing to play there at all and I genuinely wish him all the best (however I still hope his team spectacularly crashes and burns during his time there!)

Danny also needs to remember something else. No-one has ever looked good in orange!

Pretty much sums it up for me too Jono. If he had bailed on a contract to join Steelers, different matter. But the club got rid of him, and as such he has to do what is best for his family. I hope he has a successful two years personally, but that his team wins nothing and suffers some terrible hammerings against the Panthers. Also interested by Finnerty’s comment about Danny telling Steelers how to win Challenge Cups – according to many Steelers fans every time we won it, they were not interested in such a mickey mouse competition. Seems they are now.

Corey has taken a tough decision that he thinks is right and Danny has a wife and family to support so I don’t blame him for joining Sheffield. It will be very interesting to see how both teams perform and it will certainly add some spice to the new season!!

Absolutely agree. I don’t like the Steelers any more than any other Panthers fan, but if this is the move that suits Danny best for personal reasons, fair play to him. I’ll respect him as a person and a player no matter where he goes, doesn’t mean I have to like the team.

What a typical rant from TCW. Danny didn’t choose to terminate his contract – Coach Corey did it for him. Now he is free to play wher-ever he wants, and judging by the success of other release Panthers realised he has an excellent chance of winning that League Championship he has wasted 6 years of his career chasing with a lost cause.
As for breaking the wage-cap, folk in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones……

And a typical, ill informed rant from a Steeler no doubt.

      Back under your bridge troll.

Hardly ill-informed, what have the Panthers won that Steelers haven’t ? Answer, NOTHING !
As usual, losing an argument and the comments get personal. Ok, if you can’t accept the facts, try to find soneone to explain them to you who can……

Keep digging that hole son, it’ll be deep enough soon.

Isn’t it nice to know people actually READ what you blog, Jono.

Clearly, the second Ian poster (I want a clear distinction between this idiot and Iain Braisby) has never ACTUALLY encountered a rant, because if THIS was a rant, then 2012-13 is Sheffield Steelers year!!!

Ian have you asked Danny if he’d just wasted the last 6 years of his life??? No I thought not!!! He’s gone to a team nearby so that he hasn’t had to uproot his family and his business too much. Its a job for him, doing what he enjoys and getting paid for it.

    • 10 Ian May 6, 2012 at 8:06 pm

Sorry Dawn, didn’t mean any offence, just a bit of wind-up ! Danny must be absolutely gutted, and I don’t care what anyone says, he must be thinking ‘Why me ? What have I done wrong ? How come I’m the scapegoat ?’ Unfortunately he was interviewed on TV saying not winning the League was getting to him, did Corey see that a problem ? I hope not, I thought that was what we played the bulk of the season for. No, I believe Danny won’t know what to think right now – hate everything Nottingham ? Of course not. Love everything Sheffield ? Equally not.

If you’d have posted like that in the first place no-one would have had a problem.

Ian, you begin by criticising Jono for writing something that appears nowhere in the article (that Meyers broke his contract) then use a point that neither Jono nor any other Panthers fan I know of has denied (that Danny is free to join whatever team he wants) as part of your counter argument. Perhaps you should actually have read the article before you began typing.
As for relative chances of winning the league title, maybe he just improved his chances by moving to Sheffield, maybe not. Steelers have far more title winning pedigree, undeniable, but current Panthers success across all EIHL competitions is superior to Steelers, the club has a more stable infrastructure and a bigger fanbase, and it remains to be seen what next season will bring. Bit early to be on here gloating on the back of a season where your team won sod all and we won two of the three pieces of silverware.
Stedders, thanks for the clarity, I was worried myself that some confusion might arise.
