There is a very interesting debate on The Cage at the moment which talks about the supposed erosion of the identity of the Nottingham Panthers, especially since the University of Derby was named as a major sponsor. The main gripe appears to be that Derby will appear on next seasons shirts, where as Nottingham probably will not.

To be honest, I don’t have a problem with Derby University having a patch on the shirt, they should do as they’re sinking £30,000 into our club. My main issue is that GMB, not Nottingham seems to dominate not only the shirt, but the name. Go into the merchandise shop and see if you can find anything that refers to Nottingham Panthers. You won’t, everything is labelled as GMB Panthers. While I appreciate that the GMB pay a fair sized sum to be our main title sponsors, do this also mean that everything has to labelled as GMB Panthers? Let me give you an example, I was in Cologne to watch some DEL hockey earlier this year. I wore my Panthers shirt and in the bar afterwards, one Cologne fan came up to me, pointed to the shirt and asked me who the GMB’s were!

The answer seems pretty clear to me, we are the Nottingham Panthers and it’s time our identity was cemented by the addition of Nottingham once again on the club shirts.

    Quite agree here.
Sponsors have a deal with the club but it would be nice to also advertise the fact that it is Nottingham whom we support.

    Another in agreement here.

We know that the cash is all-important but I’d like to see the Panthers strike a deal that doesn’t mean losing the ‘Nottingham’ part of the name from the jersey. Genuine question, does anyone else do this?

That’s quite a few decades of history being trampled on. ‘Progress’ I guess.

I’ve always felt that the name on the front of the jersey is a helluva lot more important than the name on the back…

They’ll always be ‘The Nottingham Panthers’ to me – in spite of what the announcer says or what it says on the jersey.
